Re:Potential - 2007/09/25 18:34 When I first heard the story, I also questioned the timing. I figured it was some type of optional <cough cough> captain's practice.

The incident did occur. The girl's new D3 school announced her addition to the team about a month ago.

Re:Potential - 2007/09/25 20:06 Division I players can work with strength and conditioning coaches during the summer and I am pretty sure the off-season rules for workouts hold true for the summer if kids are enrolled in summer school. I know a player who is made to feel like has to attend summer school and practice with her team to the point that she turned down an invitation from USA Basketball.

Most DI players attend summer school so the university can pay for their housing during summer when they are expected to be with the team anyway. If they are not enrolled in summer school, they cannot receive housing.

Re:Potential - 2007/09/26 16:04 I'm around a bunch of D1 players. In the summer they have individual or small-group workouts and play pickup games at the arena. Officially speaking, it's not "practice", but the players usually just say "I'm going to practice" rather than "I'm going to my workout appointment" or "I'm going to voluntarily play pickup ball, unsupervised by the coaches, with my teamates at a pre-arranged time at the arena where only the players and perhaps a few pre-approved guests are allowed in. Although it's not mandatory, the coaches will consider it a lack of committment if I don't come on time or if I miss a session".

You forgot to insert "but running their offense" after "unsupervised by the coaches".

Re:Potential - 2007/10/12 14:52 Just the other day, the head coach at my school taught me what real fundamental basketball was all about. He taught me how there are so many options for the offensive player and moves ive never even thought about. I was playing coach one on one and i cut him off baseline, then instead of trying to muscle me past baseline he just turned and inversed layup the other direction. I think people don't reach their potential because they are too focused on the athleticism of basketball. They don't get creative and think unless they are born with the athleticism they can't be successful. I know i hear my friends saying oh wow, i lost because that guy is taller than me, or he's faster, or he's bigger, or he can dunk, but thats no excuse. There are plenty of options to do. Its part of the reason why i love basketball so much, you really don't have to be athletic at all. Anyone can be successful. If someone cuts you off, you spin and you beat them or change of direction, then you drive, pull it back, hit the jumper or hesitate and drive again, then hop stop pump fake twice and go under them. I doubt if you do that, the defense will be able to stop you. I know i had a problem with not being creative enough, but now that i knwo there are so much more options im a little closer to reaching my full potential then i was before.

Re:Potential - 2007/10/12 17:37 Good observation.

Any time a defensive player takes something away, he is vulnerable to something else. The question is whether the offensive player is skilled enough to take advantage.
