Blitz offense - 2007/08/23 21:19 Coach - entry into "Blitz" 1. our point guard drives hard to basket gets stopped 2. pivots and kicks out to wing sliding out of corner to "3 point" line free throw line extended. 3. Wing catches and attempts to drive into middle but encounters top man's defender helping 1/2 way and kicks to top. 4. Top man attempts to drive down lane side that wing came from. 5. Defender on point in corner stops drive with help...
I listed above to illusrate how we end up shooting "3"'s only or never get ball accross lane on wing dirve because of help down. Should we just have the top man go backdoor every time? He would then go behind driving wing and fill to corner with point sliding to topbehind driving wing? The backdoor move would open up possible pullup jumper for wing that is driving or allow him to kick across to other wing sliding up from corner.

This is High school level if that means anything.

Any thoughts???

Re:Blitz offense - 2007/08/23 22:50 How do you have the floor spaced? If you make the kick out pass to the top from the wing, and are getting help from the corner three, then it sounds like you are not attacking the help quick enough. Offensively you have to make teams pay for helping, especially from the ball side. Sounds like you should have at least a 2on1 scenario on the backside, this should get you paint shots.

Re:Blitz offense - 2007/08/23 23:16 Spacing is:

Wings in corners
Post weakside low
4 man weakside lane line, step outside of "3"

Our mistake might be that top man is sliding over before his man moves to help.

Also, should weakside low post cross lane if wing is driving high, i.e., above free throw line which open lane for backdoor cut by "4 man"?

Re:Blitz offense - 2007/08/24 03:28 Well, if there is this much help to cover all these drives, my first thought is (1) your kids don't drive very hard or (2) they are wide open for threes. I only advocate running this with kids who can shoot, otherwise it can become easy to defend if nobody wants to take or can make an outside shot (but, then, isn't every offense easy to defend if you don't have anyone who can shoot?).

I like to start my strong side wing higher on the court, rather than all the way in the corner. Truthfully, my guys varied it. If you think you can get the initial quick backdoor, it's good to be low. But, if you're higher, it forces the help defender to make a quicker decision and leaves a wide open lane if the help commits. Also, it gives the wing a better angle for the drive middle.

If the wing drive middle is high, then, yes, the low post should cut to the strong side to open the backdoor cut for the 4-man. If his man is quick to help, that should create a good opportunity for a backdoor lay-up, or a backdoor into a post-up on a smaller guy if the weakside wing's defender helps down, as well as the wide open three for the weakside wing.

The mistake is often the 4-man not having enough patience and immediately running to the ball. He needs to be able to wait and read the defense to create the best option, whether a backdoor, a catch and drive or a "Euro" for the three.
