Frank Allocco on coaching - 2007/02/06 06:28 Allocco is a very successful high school coach from DeLSalle High School (same one as the football streak). He was interviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle today. FWIW, if Santa Clara University is smart, Allocco would replace the retiring Dick Davey, who happens to be a great coach and a great guy.

"There's a lot of things wrong with basketball in America,'' Allocco said, sitting in the Pacheco office of his day job, as owner of Incentives For Learning, a company that publishes and distributes educational materials. "Everyone talks a good game when it comes to teaching the game, but there are very few people willing to make the demands on the kids to play basketball the way it should be played.
"I even watch college coaches who are not doing as good a job as they were five or six years ago. They're going after the player who's going to be there a year or two, and then letting them do their own thing. No one wants to hear what they can't do; they only want to hear how good they are. The college game is not as good as it once was.

"At our place, we're going to work on the things you can't do. We're not going to sugarcoat it. We're not going to scream and yell at you, but tell you there are things you've got to do.

"What we do works, and it would work at the collegiate level. It would work at the NBA level, and it would work at the Olympic level. But we've got to start making demands of kids."

Re:Frank Allocco on coaching - 2007/02/08 16:11 Wow, I would think 4 hours of sleep a night would catch up with you. Sounds like an interesting coach. Reminds me of the late Dick DeVenzio (also a fan of Broadway).

How about getting an interview and bringing us back details on one of those meticulously planned 2 1/2 hour practices.

Re:Frank Allocco on coaching - 2007/02/19 20:52 I emailed and never heard back. Basketball coaches are the toughest people to get to respond or exchange ideas. especially in comparison to strength trainers. Is it the competitive nature of a team coach vs. a strength coach who is more based on performance, not win-loss record? The only strength coaches I have had a hard time getting to respond are college strength coaches who work solely with the basketball program. Interesting. Or, am I making too much of a generalization based upon a few attempts?
