Re:4 Out 1 In Offense - 2006/10/17 14:36 I have Morgan's book and I was wondering if the drills could be adapted.

Thanks for the help Coach Vargas.

Re:4 Out 1 In Offense - 2006/10/17 17:31 I’m not a drill guy and I get frustrated when coaches email me asking for a drill as if it was the solution to their problems. I guess I use drills, but I don’t really think of them as drills, but as teaching tools, and I don’t really have names.

Brian..I am not trying to do this. I am just looking for a better way to do things.

Re:4 Out 1 In Offense - 2006/10/17 18:15 Dave:
I understand. I don't think I criticized you at all for anything you posted. However, in regards to the comment you quoted, I have no problem helping people however I can; that's why I pay to keep this site going and spend a great deal of time checking it and trying to get a little more exposure for it to draw some more people to the site to share their expertise.

However, I do feel many coaches think drills are the answer; the teaching is the answer.

My feeling is many coaches find a drill and then figure out what it teaches. I believe a coach needs to figure out what he needs to teach, and develop a drill that meets these needs. This, I suppose, is what you are doing. You know the problem and are looking for ways to solve it.

I think coach vargas gave a great response and I don't have very much more I can add. I've never run a true four-out, though I suppose in some ways I do, as I favor a spread floor with a pick and roll, much like the Suns or Duke University. So, that's my question: what are you seeking to accomplish in your four out offense? why are you running a four-out? Once you know this, the drills reveal themselves.

I'm a trainer by nature. I want to get a match-up in my favor and take advantage. Which is why I run a pick and roll a lot and try to give players space to use their skills. So, the drills I use are 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 and some pass off the dribble and shots off the catch drills. What you use will change depending on your approach.

Re:4 Out 1 In Offense - 2006/10/19 19:19 watch Eddie Jordan go through the progressions for his four-out, Princeton-esque offense here:

It's about a half-hour in.

Re:4 Out 1 In Offense - 2006/11/17 12:17 Over the last two weeks, due to two injuries which have forced me to go small, I have been putting in a more motion-oriented offense; basically, I'm trying to run a version on my Blitz Basketball System I have run in the past with some elements of Vance Walberg's system from Pepperdine University, which is also used by Memphis, St Mary's College and Denver Nuggets.

We spend the first 20 minutes doing 2v0 work and some 3v0 work to build the motion of the offense. This also is our shooting workouts, as each "drill" is more or less a shooting drill working on shots in the offense and our ball handling work, as we emphasize dribble penetration.

So, for instance, today's quick shooting progression was:

2v0 penetrate and pitch to the wing for a three
3v0 penetrate and pitch to the wing, penetrate middle and pitch to the opposite wing for the three

Off each pass, passers continued their cuts as they would in a game and filled in line as the next shooter.

Today was a small breakdown as we had a shorter practice and have a game tomorrow.

When I first taught the offense, we went 2v0, 2v2, 3v0, 3v3, 4v4 and 5v5. Now, most of our drills are 2v0 and then we play a lot of 5v5 to get comfortable with the whole of the offense.

Anyway, that's how I broke down and taught our new offense.
