Re:Paddy on the Hardwood. - 2008/07/17 18:42
His first year was similar to mine, although he lived in the country, but in a club that supports its team better. He also had the advantage of time when signing his players, as I was hired while in China and tried to sign players in the 2 days I was in California between China and Ireland. I never got my second season.
It's funny because if you go to an Irish basketball site, people only remember his first year and they think of him as the greatest coach ever. Yet, teams are really quick to let coaches go - my club had 4 coaches in 5 years. The first season coaching in a new league in a new country is very difficult. The second season is easier, especially when signing your foreign players because you know what you need. My team told me we needed a big and a PG. But, our best Irish player who stayed healthy was our PG and we got killed by teams with 2 American big guys. So, in year two, I would have signed 2 bigs and played with my two Irish PGs. So, things like that make the 2nd season much easier.
The book is a quick, interesting read. I coached against many of the players in the book. The Gaelic sport guys he writes about our 2 of the top players in the basketball league.
