timeouts - 2008/04/18 20:05 Two things I have some across recently that got my attention that deal with timeouts. First, the idea of never calling timeout in the first half (from the walberg/memphis/DDM/etc movement), and the latest from Mike and Mike in the morning interview of Flip Saunders who said that he likes to only take a few second in a timeout to say one thing. His reasoning was that players can only remember one thing anyway. I thought this might be a good place to get some good ideas on timeout strategy and usage. What to you all have to say?

Re:timeouts - 2008/04/18 20:24 In most youth games it seems pressure causes timeouts. In South Dakota most youth teams do not full court press. My team when getting pressured panics because of me not preparing them for pressure. Parents are yelling, opposing coaches are yelling and this just causes panic or trying to do too much with the dribble. We are now a team that wants to be pressured because my kids calmly get in our press breaker and pass the ball up the floor.
I know at uppper levels it seems coaches all use timouts for "momentum" purposes.

Re:timeouts - 2008/04/19 00:02 I coach a 7th grades boys traveling team. Last week was our first tournament. We started out the game playing man to man. The team we played were shorter than we were, but they were fast and blowing past my guys.
I called a time out, and placed them into a 2-1-2 zone to cut down their speed. It worked and we won by 10. I call time out to break a momentum, and to change either our offensive or defensive scheme. If things are going well, I usually never call a time out.

Re:timeouts - 2008/04/22 15:22 I agree with the Flip Saunders comment. I tend to try and solve every problem in 30 seconds when I should focus on one thing soo they can actually execute.

I use timeouts whenever necessary and do not worry about saving 4 timeouts for the last 2:00. With a short bench, I try to use them to keep the players fresh more than anything.

Re:timeouts - 2008/04/22 16:54 What about the idea of short and sweet team instruction from the head coach, then break up individually with the assistant coaches who have a(n) assigned player(s) that they watch during the game and give individualized instruction? I find myself sometimes commenting on things that don't affect the whole team (but are still important) do you think it would be more efficient to break up like this?
