Defensive Progressions for the Press Defense - 2007/12/05 16:54 I wanted to start a discussion on defensive progresssions for a m-2-m system. Personally I like to start 1/1 FC and build from there. 3/3 in the FC seems to work best, including certain restrictions on offense to give the defense some success early. Also transition defense is the most important part of the press; protecting against open lay-ups is the most important part of a pressing tea,. Thoughts?

Re:Defensive Progressions for the Press Defense - 2007/12/05 18:14 I think it depends on your philosophy. I don't think you can be a great full court defensive team if you aren't a great half court defensive team, but I do below you can use full court defense to hide bad half court defense, especially at younger and younger levels.

Since I try to do competitive type drills as much as possible, with live offense and defense, I would say I almost build the half court and full court simultaneously. However, the half court is done with a defensive emphasis while in the full court, it is shaped as a ball handling and finishing drill.

I definitely start defense 1v1. I know a lot of coaches work from the shell first and work backward, from team defense to individual defense. I believe in individual defense first and team defense second. I don't want individual defenders learning to rely on help because if the offense engages two defenders, he has done his job because someone is open. That's my goal offensively, so I want to prevent it defensively.

I mix up the 1v1 drills to attack full court, from half court, top of the key, off a pass, off a skip pass, etc. Then I go over basic defensive rotations.

However, I realized this week that because my initial head coaching experiences were in pro leagues, I rely heavily on scouting and game planning for my defense. At the HS level, I am having to change my style.

Re:Defensive Progressions for the Press Defense - 2007/12/05 18:54 Could you elborate on some of the changes you have to make? I know I do not put a great deal of time into scouting reports unless it is a district opponent. I focus on us getting better as opposed to trying to win a few games b/c we ran a box and 1 or some garbage like that. I think good 1/1 pressure can hide bad weakside defense from what I've seen. I would rather have great 1/1 defense and avg help then vice versa. Just my thoughts.

Also I read some Tom Izzo notes where he talked about switching everything in high school? Do you use the switch alot in your half court defense?

Re:Defensive Progressions for the Press Defense - 2007/12/06 04:20 The change is that I don't scout at all now and even if I did, my team is basically beginners and the terminology and quick changes one can make with pro players is not possible with beginners.

Honestly, I haven't even gotten to the point of teaching what to do on a screen yet. Baby steps. The players have never played man defense before. We're still working on basic positioning. But, I imagine I will switch everything, as personally I think it is the toughest type of defense to play against.

If I don't switch, I typically chase around screens and hedge hard, like Ben Howland teaches at UCLA.

But, like anything, it doesn't matter what you do as long as the team plays hard and plays together.
