Re:High School Pr. Planning/Use of Time - 2007/10/08 16:05 No, they hardly had any down time at all. They were jogging to the end of the line and going almost as soon as they reached the line. We got through a ton of reps. We always worked on the right side because we entered the ball on the right side 95% of the time in games. Occasionally we switched and did right and left. Everything depended on what else needed to be done and one night a week we had a 2-hour practice rather than 90 minutes so we could go a little longer and get through more reps annd more of the progression.

Re:High School Pr. Planning/Use of Time - 2007/11/08 19:19 I dont know if this should be another thread or not but I'll start it under this one.

How much does a typical pre-season practice differ from your in-season practices? I know personally I just scale down on the time for most of the drills and try to finish in an hour and a half give or take. Thoughts coaches?

Re:High School Pr. Planning/Use of Time - 2007/11/08 19:22 I suppose it depends on your philosophy, talent level and more. My pre-season practices with experiences players do not differ that much. With inexperienced players or players who are out of shape, pre-season practices have more teaching drills and conditioning than in-season. I suppose in-season practices are more detail-oriented and more competitive. but that also depends on the proximity of the next game.

Re:High School Pr. Planning/Use of Time - 2007/11/08 19:27 Good point, my in-season practices still include alot of teaching. The team I coach now has never played m-2-m before this year. And i researched this, they never even played it in youth basketball. So I teach alot defensivley. Offensivley I've already had our concepts put in, now its trying to fine tune 'em.
To give an example we have a game tom, we'll go about 90 mins today, dynamic warmup, individual development, transition work, then some 3/3 defense working on guarding the P&R which we'll see alot of tom. Then a free throw game and Game prep for about 30 mins which includes some light scrimmaging.

Re:High School Pr. Planning/Use of Time - 2007/12/08 07:13 I think it would be far more beneficial if you only did maybe 3-5 drills every practice, but do it for an extended period of time. Highschool kids don't really learn anything new if you just run a drill for 3-4 minutes. I know when i play on my school team, the quick drills we run don't accomplish anything. However when we start incorporating competitiveness and 1 on 1 drills we learn a lot more. We also blend in the fundamentals we just learned from the previous drill.
