yeah, I'd be really interested to hear an infomed answer to this question, because I see this with young athletes too.
Have you had him get up on a foam roller? One thing I've noticed about the self myofascial work is that it will almost always help at least some, and it often helps a lot. And if it's hurting, even a 10% reduction can be huge.
