Blitz offense vs zone - 2008/03/30 23:44 I currently am coaching a 7th grade boys middle school team. The league allows only man to man defense. I have implemented the Blitz offensive system and it works great. I will be also coaching a spring traveling team and they allow zone defenses. What adjustments would a coach need to make in order for it to work with zones.

Thanks

Re:Blitz offense vs zone - 2008/03/31 00:34 I asked this question a while ago on the boards, I was currently coaching a 9th grade boys team and ran the blitz ideas coupled with some ASAA things. There are a few tweaks I found successful. One is moving the trailer position (which I had as the traditional four man who could shoot 3's )in and out of the high post and having him look to ball screen as much as possible. You can get open threes as much as you want, but as freshman (and I imagine your seventh graders) I don't know if that is what you want all the time. Also, when the trailer was not setting screens he was looking to post up and seal on of the top defenders in the zone. As with all zones, if you get get the ball to the free throw area (via pass or dribble drive) you can beat it. We were not able to get much in the way of back cuts when the defender helped high because of all the help in the zone, so eventually we would just attack and fill behind which worked to some degree. We also, employed more ball reversal and skip passes that we did versus a man offense, sometimes the trailer when he was in the high post would trap the back side defender with a screen which made for a good skip pass. I hope this helps a little, let me know how it works with your team, or if you come up with any other ideas that worked.

Re:Blitz offense vs zone - 2008/03/31 04:58 Against zones we just looked to cut more and looked to fill behind the dribble.

We initiated with the drive and kick to the strong side, but started the post on the strong side block. As the penetration went from wing to middle, the trailer cut through to the basket. If the ball handler passed to the opposite side, the trailer went to the short corner and the post flashed to the midpost. If we got to the short corner, we looked for a quick shot or pass to the flashing post.

If the ball handler passed to the original point , the trailer flashed to the ball side short corner, the post moved up the lane and we looked for the same thing. The passer filled the opposite corner.

Basically, we wanted to use dribble penetration to distort the zone and create a 3v2 defender situation where the bottom of a 2-3 had to come out on the wing, leaving the middle defender to defend the post and the trailer in the short corner and mid post. Basically the same thing you want to achieve in any zone offense, just using the dribble drive and replace as a starting point.
